DMS & Martyn’s Law
In the wake of increasing security concerns, ensuring good communication has never been more crucial. Martyn’s Law, a new piece of legislation introduced into Parliament on the 12th September, aims to improve security measures in public places and underscores the importance of preparedness and effective communication in safeguarding the people in our buildings. Fireco’s Digital Messaging Service (DMS) could be a powerful tool to assist organisations in meeting these requirements.
Understanding Martyn’s Law
Martyn’s Law mandates that certain venues and public spaces implement measures to mitigate the risk of terrorist attacks. This includes carrying out risk assessments, having robust security plans, ensuring staff are trained, and having systems to communicate urgent messages to staff and patrons. Effective communication is central to this, as timely and accurate information can make all the difference in an emergency.
Officially known as the Protect Duty, the law will apply to a range of buildings, particularly those that are publicly accessible and attract large numbers of people. This includes but is not limited to, shopping centres, sports stadiums, entertainment venues, and transport hubs like train stations and airports.
How DMS Supports Compliance
DMS communicates across various channels, providing a versatile and efficient solution to meet Martyn’s Law requirements. Here’s how it can help:
- Multi-Channel Alerts – DMS can send vital alerts via SMS, WhatsApp, email, and voice messages, as well as a push notification via an optional Roll Call app. This multi-channel approach ensures that messages reach recipients through their preferred and most accessible medium, reducing the chances of communication failures.
- Instant Notifications – In emergency situations, speed is critical. DMS quickly sends alerts, enabling organisations to quickly inform staff and visitors about potential threats or necessary actions. This rapid communication is in keeping with Martyn’s Law’s emphasis on timely alerts.
- Customisable Messaging – The ability to tailor messages to different groups (e.g, staff, security teams, patrons) ensures that relevant information is conveyed appropriately. Customisable alerts can include specific instructions for different scenarios, enhancing preparedness and response strategies.
- Reliable Delivery – DMS is built to ensure high delivery rates, even in times of high demand or network congestion. This reliability is crucial for compliance with Martyn’s Law, which requires that communication systems be dependable and effective in all situations.
- Documentation and Reporting – DMS provides detailed logs and reports of all sent messages. This feature supports compliance by allowing organisations to document their communication efforts, demonstrating adherence to safety regulations and preparedness protocols.
- Easy Integration with Existing Systems – DMS can be integrated with other safety and security systems, creating a comprehensive approach to emergency management. This integration ensures that alerts are part of a larger, coordinated response plan, aligning with the safety strategies required by Martyn’s Law.
A safe environment for all
Adhering to Martyn’s Law is not just about compliance but also about ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone within public spaces. DMS provides a robust, versatile, and reliable solution to meet these legal requirements, enhancing communication and preparedness. By investing in DMS, organisations can not only fulfil their legal obligations but also foster a safer environment for staff and visitors.
